Amidst the Chaos - we will be fighting for LGBTQ equality.

Friends and Supporters of Equality New Mexico. Throughout the Legislative Session the EQNM team will add information here to keep you updated on who we are, what we’re working on, and what you can do to help! Check back for updates at least once a week!

We’re hearing a lot of news revolving around the Roundhouse and the state of emergency that was filed last week. With all this in mind, EQNM knows New Mexico’s 2021 legislative session is going to be one like we’ve never seen before. With Governor Lujan Grisham’s aggressive agenda to move our state towards progress, we’re going to have to fight with all our might to ensure that EQNM’s priority bills are passed in the next 90 days.

Our top priorities? Paid sick leave. Banning panic defense. Affirmative consent education. Workers’ justice. Getting rid of the old abortion ban on the books. And nondiscrimination laws for our LGBTQ+ community.

Even amidst the threatened violence at the Roundhouse and towards our elected officials, EQNM will continue to advocate for justice for all New Mexicans. We cannot waste the momentum we saw in November of 2020, with our new legislature being the most LGBTQ+ friendly and diverse we’ve ever seen. The 2020 elections determined the possibility of change, and now we need your help to enact and advocate for change through this tumultuous session.

Join EQNM on Facebook and online to stay up to date with our work. Thank you for your support and for continuing to fight with us for New Mexico!

Rebuilding a movement - 2021 Legislative Agenda

Movement Graphics-1.jpg

Equality New Mexico has an ambitious Legislative Agenda and we're going to need your help!

In 2021 we will:

  • Repeal New Mexico's old abortion ban to ensure all people, especially LGBTQ people, have access to quality individualized health care without government interference.

  • Ban Panic Defense to make sure New Mexicans can't blame irrational fears for violence against our community.

  • Begin dismantling health care discrimination to guarantee all LGBTQ people can get the healthcare they need while having their identities respected.

  • Require teaching Affirmative Consent as part of every Sex Ed curriculum in the state: because queer and trans youth deserve to be safe in all situations including sexual activity.

  • Collect Sexual Orientation and Gender Identitiy data for State Services so we truly know how many in our communities are in getting the services they need.

Queer liberation  is intersectional and encompasses a wide array of issues.  LGBTQ people are workers, and parents, we are active community members and we live in all identities.  So EQNM will support partners who are leading efforts to:

  • Guarantee Paid Sick Leave, because LGBTQ are at higher risk during a pandemic. Public health, the health of our own communities, needs us to be able to stay home when we are sick.

  • Address Family and Medical Leave laws to apply to all of our families regardless of how we form them.

  • Continue working the long fight for Racial Justice by supporting passage of the Crown Act in New Mexico. No one, especially Black and Indigenous Queer and Trans people should lose their job or education because of their protective hairstyles.

If we are going to be successful in this legislative agenda, we need your support to act now.  We are rebuilding a movement, and in these pandemic times we will need extra resources to organize, develop leadership and ensure that our LGBTQ voices can be heard by the Legislature.

EQNM Interim Executive Director

Supporters, Members and Friends of EQNM,

I’m so excited to have a chance to introduce myself to you.

As you may have heard  I have been appointed by the Board of Directors at EQNM as the Interim Executive Director.  I am both thrilled and honored to be taking up this position.

I'm no stranger to the fight for equality and liberation, my first job in the activism world was in fact here at EQNM.  I’ve worked as an organizer and political strategist for multiple candidates and organizations; from fighting climate change with the League of Conservation Voters to working for fair pay and safe working conditions with AFSCME-the public employees labor union. All personal fights because, like all of us, I have lived a multi-issue life.

I was born and raised in Alamogordo, New Mexico to a working-class family and a group of particularly strong women (and a few great men, too!)  In High School, I worked to educate young people about safer sex.  That’s when I learned that the rules don’t always align with what’s best for us.  I was proud to lead a group of youth who fought sex-ed rules in Alamogordo Public Schools that banned the carrying or distribution of condoms on campus.

When I moved to Albuquerque to attend UNM, I was bitten by the political bug.  I left UNM to work on multiple candidate campaigns, and for the Democratic Party. I’ve been doing it ever since.  Most recently I was the New Mexico Director of Public Affairs at Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains; leading the charge to grow that department in New Mexico from a staff of 1 and a roughly $50,000 per year budget to a political force - 6 full-time staff across the state and a 98% “win-rate” for PP endorsed candidates in New Mexico.

I'm excited to bring these experiences, my truly intersectional approach, and my passion for building coalitions and organizing across the state, to EQNM!

But I strongly believe the African Proverb “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together."

That’s why I’m going to ask you to join me, to join us, in building a new EQNM that can harness and focus the power of LGBTQ New Mexicans across the state.  Those asks will come, but today I just want to let you know who is at the helm.

Of course, I do live outside of my work, though often not much.  In a pre-pandemic world, I could often be found performing as a drag queen at the Albuquerque Social Club or traveling with my closest friends. Now I wind down by sewing or reading at home or binge-watching legal and medical dramas on TV.

Together I know that we can create and achieve a policy that betters the lives of Queer and Trans-New Mexicans, and that we can ensure the voices of LGBTQ+ people across New Mexico are heard in every place where decisions are made.  These will be my priorities, and I hope they will be among yours as well.

I look forward to working with you,

Marshall Martinez

Transitions at EQNM

Dear EQNM Members and Supporters

2020 has brought with it shifts and changes, in each of our lives. Some better, some worse. Equality New Mexico, and Equality New Mexico Foundation’s Board of Directors hope that you, your families, and our communities are weathering this tumultuous year, in the best possible ways.   Our thoughts are with members of the Queer and Trans communities, with New Mexicans across the state in this time of global pandemic, political uprisings, and economic struggles.

Equality New Mexico is also experiencing transition in this time, as many would expect.  From shifting our work to be more digital, helping our communities feel connected in an isolating world, to turning our eyes to the General Election where New Mexicans will elect 112 State Legislators, and Americans will choose a direction for the next four years. As you know Adrian Carver served as the organization's Executive Director for 3 years, a term that ended this July.  We thank Adrian for his work and service to our LGBTQ community across New Mexico.

Equality New Mexico is excited to welcome an Interim Executive Director, Marshall Martinez.

Marshall is not new to Equality New Mexico, in fact his first Community Organizing job was at EQNM in 2002-2003 - when we were fighting for Workplace Discrimination protections at the State Legislature. New to Albuquerque, Marshall was born and raised in Alamogordo, New Mexico and was a student at UNM when he started this work.   In the years since Marshall has continued his activism and advocacy work, having supported many candidates and elected officials in their bids for public office on political campaigns.  Marshall was the Director of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico for 5 years, successfully overseeing the growth of that department to be the political force of nature it is now, while also working to help PPRM address abortion stigma through education and reshaping the organization’s image in New Mexico communities.  Marshall is no stranger to the work, and is well-suited to pick up the mantle of EQNM and move us into the next decade.

Marshall will excitedly hit the ground running, and will make himself available for conversations with our Queer and Trans communities across the state in the coming weeks.  We are excited and grateful to have Marshall’s leadership as we continue though the growth that 2020 has thrust upon us all.

The Boards of Directors want to take this moment to reaffirm our core values, as a diverse and  inclusive education and advocacy organization for LGBTQ New Mexicans. We work in solidarity with those most impacted by policy change, especially communities of color, and we look to the leadership of Queer and Trans people of color as we work collaboratively to strengthen the voices of our communities.

Sincerely,

Board of Directors

Equality New Mexico and Equality New Mexico Foundation

Congressional Candidate would give employers a license to discriminate

Community,

A conservative Northern New Mexico Congressional candidate, Alexis Martinez Johnson, wants to give employers a license to discriminate against transgender employees.

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court heard three cases that could either take away existing LGBTQ+ employment protections, or affirm that existing federal law does protect LGBTQ+ people. Although we will remain protected in New Mexico, these cases have the potential to erode the fabric of our nation’s character. With a conservative majority on the Court, a bad decision could undermine our nation’s nondiscrimination laws and invite discrimination and harassment against LGBTQ+ people nationwide.

Here's where it gets good: yesterday, in an interview with KOB-TV's Chris Ramirez, when asked about the upcoming decision on three Title VII nondiscrimination cases, Martinez Johnson says:

"If the individual is employed, and they decide to be transgender and be in a situation like that, I think the employer should have the ability to make the decision, but we will see what the Supreme Court says, and we will follow the rule of the law."

Say what?

  1. It's 2020. (but then again, maybe that's the problem, amirite?)

  2. People do not choose to be transgender.

  3. Transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people should never have employers make decisions about their bodies.

At Equality New Mexico, we've spent the last 27 years winning equality by enshrining protections for the trans and queer community into law. In fact, after the unanimous passage of the Nondiscrimination Equality Act in 2019, New Mexicans enjoy (and will continue to enjoy) some of the strongest protections in the nation. Martinez Johnson would have us go backwards decades.

It's clear we have work to do, still. Join us in the fight. Click here now to donate>>>

City of Albuquerque Improves Score on National LGBTQ+ Report Card

Albuquerque has made progress over the past year in LGBTQ equality and inclusion

Albuquerque, N.M ⎻ The City of Albuquerque is climbing the charts on a national index that measures how well a city treats its LGBTQ+ community. The City earned a score of 85 this year, a jump up from 74 in 2018, according to the report released by the Human Rights Campaign.

The 2019 Municipal Equality Index (MEI) Report rates more than 500 cities nationwide based on their laws, policies, and services impacting the LGBTQ+ community.

“The improvement we made this year in making Albuquerque more inclusive is important progress for our community,” Mayor Keller said, “However, our work is not done. We will keep up our efforts to partner with local advocates, strengthen our policies and practices and fight discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.”

The City received points for ensuring transgender City employees receive health coverage benefits for transition-related health care, as well as for appointing a staff member to be a liaison between the Mayor’s Office and the LGBTQ community. The Human Rights Campaign also awarded points for the City of Albuquerque’s designation of a Pride House for LGBTQ elders during the National Senior Games, as well as for funding the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico.

Albuquerque continues to score high in the areas of non-discrimination in City employment, having an inclusive workplace, and providing domestic partner benefits in the City’s employee benefit package. The City also rated highly for having a Human Rights Commission, for enforcing non-discrimination, and for reporting hate crimes to the FBI.

“In Albuquerque, we value and celebrate members of the transgender and queer communities,” says Adrian Carver, Executive Director of Equality New Mexico. “It’s important for LGBTQ+ Burqueños to know that our community has a strong partner in Mayor Keller. Equality New Mexico is proud to have worked with the two openly LGBTQ+ city councilors, Pat Davis and Diane Gibson, and the Mayor’s office to raise our score. We look forward to continuing this work so that everyone in our city lives a self-determinate life.”

The Human Rights Campaign issued the first MEI report card in 2012. Since its first report it has served as a tool and guide for many cities to develop, share and sustain equitable and inclusive practices for the LGBTQ+ community.

PRESS RELEASE: EQNM Endorses Isaac Benton, Ane Romero, Pat Davis, and Maurreen Skowran for Albuquerque City Council

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — The Board of Directors of Equality New Mexico (EQNM), the state’s largest and oldest LGBTQ+ political advocacy organization, has endorsed Isaac Benton, Ane Romero, Patrick Davis, and Maureen Skowran for Albuquerque City Council.

Each of these four candidates has unique characteristics which we believe make them the right person for the job of City Councilor. Each has a strong, lengthy record of being a champion for the LGBTQ+ community, either through their elected office and/or the lived experience of their own identities. We take our endorsement process seriously and have made these decisions only after significant consideration and feedback from our community. If elected or re-elected, Maureen and Patrick will join Diane Gibson on the Council, setting an Albuquerque record for the number of openly LGBTQ+ councilors. The Board recognizes the incredible talent and commitment to our communities demonstrated by the other candidates who sought our endorsement in these races: Zachary Quintero, Robert Blanquera Nelson, and Gina Dennis. We look forward to working with each of you in your pursuit of public service.

Isaac “Ike” Benton – District 2 was previously endorsed by EQNM and is a long-time co-sponsor of EQNM legislative initiatives at the city. Ike has a strong, demonstrated record of supporting policies that promote equity and diversity. Benton supports an ordinance that would protect youth from bullying and harassment at community centers based on their identity, which includes language about alternative forms of discipline focused on education, remediation, prevention, and providing support for the target of bullying rather than exclusionary discipline, criminalization, or “zero tolerance” policies for bullying and harassment. Finally, he is committed to fair hiring and employment practices by Albuquerque government and private employers, working in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of Equity and Inclusion and LGBTQ+ advocates to identify gaps and opportunities for legislative action.

“LGBTQ+ residents are key to our success as a community,” says Benton. “The role of government and community programs is to open doors to underserved populations that have historically been excluded from the economy. These must include everyone: women, immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ+ [communities], poor and working class people. [...] We must celebrate and promote diversity and understanding.”

Ane Romero – District 4 has worked tirelessly as an ally of the LGBTQ+ community. As the Policy Director for the Center for Civic Policy, she worked with LGBTQ+ advocates (including advocates from EQNM) to highlight, prioritize and pass LGBTQ+ policies at the state level. Romero has also worked for many years on behavioral health and suicide prevention initiatives and legislation, knowing that queer and transgender young people disproportionately attempt suicide. She has worked directly with LGBTQ+ youth, educating community members, families, and educators about risk factors that LGBTQ+ youth face.

“As city councilor, [I will] allow those who are experts in LGBTQ+ work to lead and guide the work,” says Romero. I will stand with the LGBTQ+ community to ensure that we expand policies to include opportunities for equality and oppose policies that discriminate in any way. Whether it’s protecting families or standing against policies that would openly allow businesses to discriminate against LGBTQ+ communities, I am committed to working on key policies that will help eliminate discrimination practices and any other policies that aim to pose a risk to the rights and freedoms of the LGBTQ+ community.”

Patrick Davis – District 6, as an openly gay City Councilor, has contributed to Albuquerque’s rapid progress in deepening protections for the LGBTQ+ community and he is committed to making protections even deeper and stronger. Davis, both as a councilor and in his professional career, has supported key EQNM initiatives, including our campaign to keep extreme conservative candidates from getting elected to the school board to creating a legal defense fund for county clerks issuing marriage licenses (before the NM Supreme Court decision) in 2013. Davis believes that "systemic inequality carries forward from generation to generation and we must address the inequities in education, job creation, addiction and entrepreneurship in order to help lift families out of poverty because the legacies of slavery and colonialism still exist in our social institutions.”

“I’m proud that we include LGBTQ+ affirming language, definitions and protections in our city policies but there is more we can do. [We can] recognize LGBTQ+-owned businesses for purchasing preferences, create dedicated LGBTQ+ liasons in city departments, specifically for police and fire, [and] expand city participation in national LGBTQ+ leadership networks,” says Davis.

Maureen Skowran – District 8, believe that we are defined by our core values – two of those defining values are a willingness to do the hard work to make things better and a commitment to service to country and community. We look forward to the opportunity to see Maurreen work on making our neighborhoods safe, expanding community resources, creating a vibrant local economy, and addressing the crises in homelessness, addition, and mental health – all through regular engagement with her district. Skowran would be the third openly LGBTQ+ member of the council.

”I am the only candidate from City Council District 8 who knows what it is like to be afraid to hold someone’s hand when walking in public or to be concerned when applying for a job that I will be denied employment because of my sexual orientation. I will stand up for LGBTQ rights because they are my rights and the rights of many in my district and throughout the city of Albuquerque,” says Skowran.

Equality New Mexico is proud to support these candidates who will help make the city of Albuquerque a more inclusive, safer, healthier place in which all people are supported, are valued, and experience equality and dignity in every aspect of life.
