We’re working to close discrimination loopholes in New Mexico’s administrative code.
In 2003, Equality New Mexico led the charge to pass one of the strongest anti-discrimination laws in the country. While transgender and queer people in New Mexico are protected from discrimination in most public accommodations, we still need to clarify those protections in various state agencies.
For instance, we might assume that public schools, universities, and foster agencies are covered as "public accommodations" under the law, but that's not always true. This ambiguity leaves a lot of people vulnerable to discrimination. For that reason, we are working to close loopholes in the administrative policies of state agencies like the Children Youth and Families Department, the Public Education Department, and the Higher Education Department.
Are you a student, educator, school staff, foster youth, parent, guardian, or foster parent that has experienced discrimination in any of these settings? Please share your experiences below describing when and where this took place and how it impacted you.
